“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.”
- Antoine de Saint-Exupery

The story of Robinson Crusoe, by Daniel Defoe is one of epic bravery. It is the tale of a sole English sailor marooned on a desert island for twenty-eight years. It recounts the journey of an ordinary man who struggles to survive in extraordinary circumstances and succeeds!

The ability to envision a future where none apparently exists is a unique trait of us as human beings. It is this ability that has aided in all human advancement, in all new research and development and in building fortitude & resilience to overcome the toughest of circumstances like what Robinson Crusoe found himself in.

Borrowing from this legendary story, The Robinson Crusoe Challenge puts participants into different virtual teams running their own travel agencies. Unfortunately, they are all in the midst of a pandemic where travel is severely restricted. There seems to be no hope in the immediate future, of customers using travel services. The challenge for each of the teams in such a scenario when demand is sluggish, is to create a pitch for their assigned customer persona to travel.

Team members dive into their personal travel experiences to put together a shared presentation that brings out the different facets that inspire people to travel. Experiences of new friendships forged, food savoured, challenges overcome, adventures lived, spirituality realised, culture experienced etc. Teams need to weave the different threads in individual stories into one rich tapestry that tells a compelling story.

The Robinson Crusoe Challenge is a fast paced activity that engages participants by getting them to dive deep into their own fond travel memories while simultaneously challenging them to collaborate to arrive at a single narrative. Laughter naturally bubbles up as participants relive and share their experiences.

The activity can be run purely as an engagement activity or as an activity with a purposeful debrief at the end. When debriefed, the activity is brought to a close with participants sharing their different thoughts, experiences and insights from the activity and connecting the experience back to their different workplace situations. As a finale, we unveil the top 3 teams – to loud cheers from one and all.
