About “Storyboard Challenge”

Stories have a way of making the complex clear. When narrated as a story
interspersed with anecdotes, metaphors and analogy – lifeless data springs to
life and teams are moved to action. While conveying a message or a story as the
timeless insight tells us – a picture speaks a thousand words! The Storyboard
Challenge puts both these insights together – the power of stories and the
strength of the visual medium to offer a unique challenge to teams. Can they
tell a story through the images that they will paint?

This activity works best with 4 to 5 participants in a team. So, depending on the total number of participants, you can decide on the number of teams to be formed for the activity. In this activity, teams create paintings which come together to form a coherent story. Since all the paintings come together to form a larger image and story, the number of teams should be such that they form a square or rectangle. For example, if we have a group of 40 participants, we have 2 choices for team formation:

  • 8 teams, forming a larger grid of 2 (height) X 4 (width)
  • 10 teams, forming a larger grid of 2 (height) X 5 (width)

If being done indoors, you will need a large enough conference room without any tables. It is preferable to have a conference room that can seat all participants in cluster style with a bit of extra space left for movement during the activity. Preferably, you must conduct the activity outdoors where you have enough space to put together the canvases.

Teams usually find ways to choose imagery that they are capable of representing. The objective is not to measure the artistic ability during the activity, but rather the important aspects of teamwork, like communication, collaboration, aligning to the vision etc.

Yes of course, many clients would want to do that. If your client is planning to put up the final storyboard in their office, then you can plan the size of the image accordingly.
