The Egyptian Challenge

Built during a time when Egypt was one of the richest and most powerful civilizations in the world, the pyramids— are some of the most magnificent man-made structures in history. Their massive scale can be estimated by the fact that approximately 2.3 million blocks of stone (averaging about 2.5 tons each) had to be cut, transported and assembled to build the Great Pyramid. It took 20 years to build and required the labour of 200,000 men!

FocusU invites you to relive this challenge with your team through The Egyptian Challenge!

In this engrossing team experience, large teams are broken up into smaller units, who are then challenged to build their own small Pyramids. As the builders of yore would vouch for – that is easier said than done! All the equipment they would possibly need is handed to them - cardboard, paper cutters, et al. But what teams need to bring in themselves is their innovativeness, their creativity & their acumen in planning.
Teams toil and sweat – before they figure out the magic mantra of leveraging every single person in the team, to put up their own individual pyramids. But as anyone who has been in a FocusU workshop earlier would know, we never like our participants to get anything easily. And so the final twist in the activity comes about when our Pharaoh puts forth the final challenge to all the teams: To put together all their individual Pyramids to form one mega Pyramid.

What was till then an activity that called for Creativity, Innovation and Precision – suddenly transforms into one that now calls for completely different skill sets – Intra team collaboration, Team communication under pressure, Leadership & even Handling of conflict situations!

Piece by piece, block by block – through debates and conflicts, through trial and error, through streaks of luck at times, teams do figure out a way to make sense out of the puzzling ambiguity. And to their own amazement and delight, slowly but surely – a magnificent Pyramid comes up.

Is The Egyptian Challenge right for my team?

This is a wonderful activity when you want to send messages around the need to coalesce around a single vision. Or when you want to send the message to the team – that while smaller teams have their own priorities, they all need to interlock together to form a seamless whole. Themes around team communication, handling and resolving of conflict, the need to assume Leadership – all these are themes that get debriefed in a very engaging manner with this activity.

The Egyptian Challenge can be run either indoors or outdoors – for team sizes of 50 – 1000 people at a time. Invite your team to take The Egyptian Challenge!

Would say this is easily one of the best sessions I would have attended in a long time – the mix of fun and messaging was perfect and can easily notice the change in attitudes on the floor.
