Teams are not built. ‘Natural Teams’ happen when the right environment is created. The instinct to hunt, survive, and WIN in packs is part of our primitive programming. The challenge of leadership is to create the environment where this instinct is not blocked.

Some time ago, I did a “CorporateTheatre” Power Team Dynamics workshop with the leadership team of a hospital group. They were a senior, experienced, and highly qualified bunch from various speciality groups like medicine, bio-medical engineering, finance, administration, HR, etc. In the second half of the workshop, the group was divided into 3 teams to compete in a theatre-based contest. This exercise is designed to facilitate deep experiential learning in areas like bonding instantly into changing teams, role adaptability and alignment, creative communication, situational leadership, dealing with failure, and recognising star performance without diluting the team instinct for collective success.

We were born as who we are, yet people around want us to become like someone who we are not. Your manager wants you to act like your super natural colleague, your parents want you to become like your neighbour’s super achieving son, your friend wants you to act like your super talented friend.
Have you ever had the need to split a team?
One of the pleasures of being in a job where you are constantly in front of groups, conducting workshops, is the instantaneous positive feedback one gets at the end of a workshop that goes well. This is especially true for Team building workshops that we conduct. A colleague of mine had written a very nice article about the same, where he talked about a HUGS-BAROMETER – the number of hugs one gets as a Facilitator at the end of the workshop. I can think of few other jobs that give such instant feedback and gratification!
We lost a deal to a competitor in the previous week. We were disappointed of course – yet we went back to the customer and explored what choice of activities they had finally gone with.
Just imagine – What would the world be like without competition? While the first thought is…. “Oh lovely!….. Achieving all targets would be such a breeze!”… its not for nothing that competition is called the spice of life.
The Focus team just had a jaw-dropping, mind-boggling and awe-inspiring (ok ok, i’ll cut short the superlatives here!) offsite camp at Rishikesh.

We spoke in one of our earlier blogs about team work in the animal kingdom. That got me curious if there are similar stories from the plant kingdom as well. Some research in the subject was enlightening for me – flora and fauna are equally rich in examples of good team work! Yes, you heard that right – plants also show some of the same behaviors that are observed in the corporate world like collaboration, cohesiveness and common goals!
