But then a feeling of sadness creeps in… you know you have a team building activity planned and you don’t want to spend the next day in a conference room.
With over a decade of team building and learning development experience, there is one question that we are often faced with –
Teamwork is a great thing. But it’s not the thing that makes teams great. Being a team comes from so much more than the idea of working together simply because you are in the same company, go to the same office, or work on the same project. Great teams come from companies that are bound together by more than financial goals or physical proximity. The best teams tend to be extremely diverse in many ways, but there is still something that is common between team members: values.

As professionals in the teambuilding and facilitation space, we have the opportunity to run exciting, out of the box activities that bring teams closer together while allowing for meaningful ideas to arise. But before an idea makes it to the execution stage, we need to also explain the why for each activity.
5 Dysfunction of a Team, Good to Great, Superteams, and many other books share a lot of ideas that help convert a less productive team into a high performing one. These books offer various ideas and tools to guide managers and leaders to push their teams to move to the next level.
When we hear the word team, we think of a group of people coming together to create, produce, or accomplish something together. Some of the best and most common examples of good teams are sports teams. But let’s take a step outside of the stadium and into the theatre. A less-used, but equally apt example is the orchestra: the world’s greatest team. Okay okay, perhaps I’m biased (being a musician) but let’s take a look at the components of the orchestra to see how they continually create harmony.
Teams are not built. ‘Natural Teams’ happen when the right environment is created. The instinct to hunt, survive, and WIN in packs is part of our primitive programming. The challenge of leadership is to create the environment where this instinct is not blocked.

Music is all around us. It exists in the songs of the birds, in the waves of the oceans, and in a child’s laughter. Music even shows up in some unlikely places – in the horns on trucks, in the conversation of the couple sitting across from you in the coffee shop, and in the rhythmic roti making at the dhaba. So why not make music without instruments?
