The essence of growth and development has remained strikingly similar over centuries. At first glance, they seem worlds apart — one steeped in the cobblestone streets of ancient cities, the other in the polished boardrooms of today’s corporate world. But as I recently discovered on a trip to Rome, the essence of growth and development has remained strikingly similar over centuries. This continuity reveals a fascinating truth: the way we approach growth, learning, and mastery may evolve, but its core remains steadfast. 

Let me share why:

While wandering through the Roman ruins and soaking myself in the stories of philosophers like Marcus Aurelius and Cicero  — giants who shaped their times with wisdom and leadership —  it became clear that the essence of learning, growth, and leadership has remained remarkably consistent over the centuries. Marcus Aurelius, a Stoic philosopher and Roman Emperor, is remembered for his resilience and moral clarity. Cicero, one of Rome’s greatest orators, epitomized the power of effective communication. And later, during the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci’s unmatched curiosity and interdisciplinary genius set the stage for modern innovation. These figures exemplify enduring lessons on learning and leadership. The teachings of these philosophers, as explained by my guide, were strikingly similar to the principles found in modern Leadership Development Programs.

There, he was exposed to a wide range of disciplines — painting, sculpting, anatomy, engineering, and botany — skills that
