Can you imagine an employee work force that believes in ‘Thank God it’s Monday?’ Building a positive work culture is not rocket science. Sir Richard Branson (Founder of Virgin Group) also agreed when he said, “There’s no magic formula for great company culture. The key is just to treat your staff how you would like to be treated.” People are fundamental in driving the success of a business. If you treat your staff like the smart and capable adults they are, and give them the ability to make informed decisions, you will cultivate an environment in which everyone can flourish.
Hate is a very strong word that I rarely ever use. But in the context of this article, it seems quite appropriate. Before many of my friends in this function/profession take offence, let me clarify what I mean.
We do a lot of our team building workshops as part of team off-sites that clients organize. During the planning of such programs, one of the common questions that we get from organizers is to suggest gifts to give to the team during the offsite. This is trickier than it sounds! I remember talking to a participant during a workshop in Goa, where they had been presented yet again with a Hawaiian shirt! This is what he had to say – “I am not sure why we get these every time we do an offsite. This is the 3rd offsite we are doing in Goa in the past 5-6 years I have been with the company and every year we get the stereotyped Hawaiian Shirt! It has become a joke within the team. The people who organize these meets seem to have absolutely no clue about what we would really like or they don’t spend any time thinking what to give!”
For the record, let it be known – Mushrooms have always fascinated me. Everything, ranging from its shape, its smell, how it sprouts so quickly and more over about where it grows. Today mushrooms are even considered miniature pharmaceutical factories, and of the thousands of mushroom species in nature, our ancestors and modern scientists have identified several dozen having unique properties that improves our health.
