Simon Taufel is an Australian cricket umpire and a former member of the ICC Elite Umpires panel. He won — a record-setting — five consecutive ICC Umpire of the Year awards between 2004 and 2008 for impeccable integrity, conflict management skills, and maintaining the highest standard of professionalism. Simon leverages his decades of experience in managing international cricket matches while conducting corporate training programs on leadership, conflict management, resilience, goal setting, continuous improvement, and personal development.
Despite initially having no intention of becoming an umpire, he agreed to go along with a friend to an umpiring course. After he passed the subsequent exam, he began umpiring grade cricket. He quickly progressed through the ranks and made his first-class debut in 1995, aged just 24. He then went on to umpire his first test match at 29. He is the youngest person to have received the ICC’s Bronze Bails Award for umpiring 100 ODIs. Simon has officiated in three ICC Cricket World Cups, including being the first and only Australian to officiate a World Cup final match (2011).
After his career in active international umpiring, he became the first ICC Umpire Performance and Training Manager. During these years, he created and implemented cricket umpiring’s first competency-based accreditation program. In 2013, Simon delivered the MCC’s Cowdrey Spirit of Cricket lecture at Lords as the 13th person and third Australian behind Richie Benaud and Adam Gilchrist.
His career in international cricket match administration and umpiring has endowed him with practical experience in conflict management, leadership management, and personal development dynamics. His masterclass sessions are hugely engaging and popular because of the way he connects lessons from the sport with contextual metaphors relevant to the corporate world.
