The Terrarium Challenge

Terra what?

We had the same question when we first came across a terrarium. But peel the skin and dive a little deeper and we promise, you will fall in love with this absolutely fantastic concept!

Here is what Wikipedia has to say: A terrarium is usually a sealable glass container containing soil and plants, and can be opened for maintenance to access the plants inside. They are often kept as decorative or ornamental items. Terrariums create a unique environment for plant growth, as the transparent walls allow for both heat and light to enter the terrarium. The sealed container combined with the heat entering the terrarium allows for the creation of a small-scale water cycle. This happens because moisture from both the soil and plants evaporates in the elevated temperatures inside the terrarium. This water vapour then condenses on the walls of the container, and eventually falls back to the plants and soil below. This contributes to creating an ideal environment for growing plants due to the constant supply of water, thereby preventing the plants from becoming over dry. In addition to this, the light that passes through the transparent material of the terrarium allows for the plants within to photosynthesize, an important aspect of plant growth. The best thing about them? They are super-easy to make and are low-maintenance.

Something so interesting – had to catch our attention at FocusU!

In this engaging team building activity, that we bring to you in association with our partners Bloom and Grow, corporate teams are challenged to express their creativity in a fun and eco-friendly way. The challenge is simple: In the given time – Build your own Terrarium!

The session that takes around 2 hours – is kicked off through a small session introducing the concept of terrariums to the participants. This would also include introduction to basic materials (charcoal, moss, gravel, soil etc) used for building the terrarium. The only help that teams can expect from the “unhelpful” FocusU Facilitators is a basic run through of the fundamental procedure/ instructions to build a Terrarium. Everything else – that includes imagination, creativity, sweat & toil, getting the hands dirty – is to be done by the participants. And oh yes, most of the material is not handed over. It needs to be earned by the team by completing interesting side challenges!

Lest you actually start thinking of our Facilitators as “unhelpful” (hey we were kidding!), we do provide the most ingredient for the teams to succeed – the different themes for the terrariums being built. Sample a few:
• Beautify your office lobby/reception
• Make your portable miniature lush forest
• Create around a Desert theme

Building a terrarium – a word which most people would perhaps be hearing for the first time, is an interesting way to challenge teams to embrace new challenges. Designed and gamified in a manner that there are clear restrictions in terms of materials, supplies and time – teams need to find a way to succeed through it all. The challenge calls for teams to brainstorm and ideate about all innovations that one could do in the ambit of a small terrarium. Differentiating the terrariums calls for creativity not just with the plants, but also through creating and adding miniatures / figurines to be made out of air dried clay! Natural team dynamics takes over – as teams that are formed, storm and norm before arriving at acceptable performance levels!

The best thing we think, about the Terrarium Challenge is that – they can be donated away to charity to make dull, uninspiring spaces sprout to life through the gift of vegetation!

Is the Terrarium Challenge right for my team?

This is a very different activity that fosters creativity, team work, project planning and collaboration in teams. It can be run for teams up to 150 people at a time. When run in the context of CSR and giving – it can also be debriefed around the difference we can make in our environment, through small acts of kindness and giving.
